Day 9: Plant Life Cycles
Objectives
Students will:

- define the terms seed, sprout, seedling, and adult plant.
- investigate the life cycle of plants and change over time.
- identify life needs of plants.
Materials
- book - From Seed to Plant, by Gail Gibbons
- book - From Plant to Blue Jeans, by Arthur John L'Hommedieu
- video clip - Life Cycle of a Plant
- students' science notebooks
- two large pieces of paper
- white paper plates (two per student)
- cotton plant phases template
- construction paper - brown, green, pink, and white
- scissors
- tape
- yarn (one arm length per student)
- glue
- cotton balls (five per student)
Instruction Sequence
- Read aloud book - From Seed to Plant, by Gail Gibbons
- K-W-L chart as a whole class
- Guide discussion about plants by asking questions such as: What do you know about plants? How does a plant begin its life? How do plants grow? How do plants make new plants?
- Play video clip
- Define the terms seed, sprout, seedling, and adult plant and have students write definitions in their science notebook
- Teach the steps of a plant's life cycle by having students help illustrate the cycle
- Have students sketch each step of a plants life cycle in their science notebook
- Cotton Plant Life Cycle activity
- Students will collect materials needed
- Students will cut one paper plate in half and attach two paper plates together to create a pocket
- Students will cut out parts of a cotton plant
- Students will attach the parts of the plant in the order in which they occur in the plant's life cycle
- Students will glue cotton balls to front of whole paper plate
- Revisit K-W-L chart and complete column "L"
Assessments
Formative: Students will answer questions such as: What do you know about plants? How does a plant begin its life? How do plants grow? How do plants make new plants? Students will sketch each step of a plant's life cycle in their science notebook.
Summative: Students will create a model of the life cycle of a cotton plant. Students will together complete "L" column on K-W-L chart.
