Day 5: Tides
Objectives
Students will:
Students will:
- define the terms gravity, high tide, and low tide.
- collect and analyze data from simple tide tables to determine a pattern of high and low tides.
Materials
- K-W-L chart handout
- video clip -Weird Science: Learn About Tides
- PowerPoint presentation
- tide chart
- white paper
- coloring utensils
Instruction Sequence
- Have students fill out the "K" and "W" columns on a K-W-L chart about the ocean and tides
- Lead discussion about the ocean and tides by asking questions such as: What makes waves on the ocean? What are tides? What makes tides go up and down? Does the moon have gravity? Does the sun have gravity? What effect does the moon's gravity have on the ocean?
- Play video clip
- PowerPoint presentation
- Define the terms gravity, high tide, and low tide during PowerPoint presentation
- Students will analyze tide chart
- Illustration activity
- Students will use the information they have learned and illustrate a high tide scene on one side of a piece of paper and a low tide scene on the other
- Students will revisit their K-W-L chart and fill out the "L" column
Assessments
Formative: Students will answer questions such as: What makes waves on the ocean? What are tides? What makes tides go up and down? Does the moon have gravity? Does the sun have gravity? What effect does the moon's gravity have on the ocean?
Summative: Students will use their knowledge of the moon's gravitational pull to illustrate both high tide and low tide. Students will fill out the "L" column on a K-W-L chart.
