Day 8: Animal Life Cycles - Metamorphosis
Objectives

- define the term metamorphosis.
- describe the pattern of changes that a butterfly goes through during its life cycle.
Materials
- book - Are You a Butterfly? by Judy Allen
- students' science notebooks
- white paper plates
- green construction paper
- beans
- pasta noodles (rotini, shell, bow-tie)
- glue
Instruction Sequence
- Read aloud book - Are You a Butterfly?, by Judy Allen
- Review animal life cycles from previous lesson
- Lead discussion about different types of animal life cycles (metamorphosis) by asking questions such as: What kinds of changes do you think animals such as a butterfly or frog go through that are different from the changes a mammal goes through during its life cycle?
- Play video clip - Life Cycle of a Butterfly
- Define the term metamorphosis and have students write definition in their science notebook
- Life Cycle of a Butterfly paper plate activity
- Students will collect materials
- Students will cut out four leaves
- Students will glue beans on the first leaf and label them "eggs"
- Students will glue rotini pasta noodle on the second leaf and label it "caterpillar"
- Students will glue shell pasta noodle on the third leaf and label it "chrysalis"
- Students will glue bow-tie pasta noodle on the fourth leaf and label it "butterfly"
Assessments
Formative: Students will answer questions such as: What kinds of changes do you think animals such as a butterfly or frog go through that are different from the changes a mammal goes through during its life cycle?
Summative: Students will create a model of the life cycle of a butterfly.
