Objectives

- book - Going Home, The Mystery of Animal Migration, by Marianne Berks and illustrated by Jennifer DiRubbio
- animal migration books from library (several)
- video clip - Life: Monarch Butterfly Winter Migration
- computer (laptop or iPad)
- students' science notebooks
Instruction Sequence
- Introduce the term migrate and define
- Instruct students to define the term migrate in their science notebooks
- Play video clip
- Lead discussion about animal migration by asking questions: How does the migration of animals relate to seasons? What are some animals that migrate? Why do you think animals migrate?
- Create a library in the classroom by collecting various books on animal migration from the school library and/or local library
- Research activity
- Students will be paired with a partner
- Students will research animals that migrate by looking through different books from the classroom library
- Students will make a list of three to five animals that migrate in their science notebooks
- Students will write one fact that explains how they know that the animal migrates
- Students will share one of the animals they listed and their fact with the class
Assessments
Formative: Students will answer questions such as: How does the migration of animals relate to seasons? What are some animals that migrate? Why do you think animals migrate?
Summative: Students will research animals that migrate and compose a list of three to five animals that migrate along with one fact that explains how they know that the animal migrates.
